I Had a Coach Like “Cheer’s” Monica Aldama

As I sit down to write this, it’s April of 2020 but January feels like several years ago. January was so long ago. It was months before the COVID-19 pandemic hit America. We were all still going into our offices. Grocery stores had plenty of toilet paper. We hadn’t yet started obsessing over Tiger King. We were all watching and talking about Cheer, the six-part docuseries on Netflix.

If you’re not familiar, Cheer covers the elite cheerleading team from a junior college in Texas. The Navarro College Bulldogs are 13-time National Champions at the time of filming. The series follows the team throughout the season through injuries, team drama, and the regular perils of being a young adult.

We all quickly fell in love with Cheer for a few reasons. First, the cheerleading we see is truly spectacular — they are amazing athletes. Also, the series does an incredible job of highlighting the most beautiful, vulnerable stories of some of the team members. But a lot of us couldn’t stop watching the show because we became obsessed with the team’s head coach — Monica Aldama. You can read more about our obsession with Monica please see:
